World's rules-based order 'no longer exists', Germany's Merz warns
The rules-based world order no longer exists, the German Chancellor has warned at a major security summit. Opening the annual Munich Security Conference, Friedrich Merz told other world leaders that our freedom is not guaranteed in an era of big power politics, and that Europeans must be ready to make sacrifice. He also admitted that a deep divide has opened between Europe and the United States. The conference is taking place on the backdrop of US President Donald Trump threatening Denmark's sovereignty over Greenland by pledging to annex the Arctic territory and his tariffs on imports from European nations. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who was listening to Merz and will deliver his own speech on Saturday, earlier spoke of a new era in geopolitics.

The Landscape of Arabic Large Language Models (ALLMs): A New Era for Arabic Language Technology
Al-Khalifa, Shahad, Durrani, Nadir, Al-Khalifa, Hend, Alam, Firoj
The emergence of ChatGPT marked a transformative milestone for Artificial Intelligence (AI), showcasing the remarkable potential of Large Language Models (LLMs) to generate human-like text. This wave of innovation has revolutionized how we interact with technology, seamlessly integrating LLMs into everyday tasks such as vacation planning, email drafting, and content creation. While English-speaking users have significantly benefited from these advancements, the Arabic world faces distinct challenges in developing Arabic-specific LLMs. Arabic, one of the languages spoken most widely around the world, serves more than 422 million native speakers in 27 countries and is deeply rooted in a rich linguistic and cultural heritage. Developing Arabic LLMs (ALLMs) presents an unparalleled opportunity to bridge technological gaps and empower communities. The journey of ALLMs has been both fascinating and complex, evolving from rudimentary text processing systems to sophisticated AI-driven models. This article explores the trajectory of ALLMs, from their inception to the present day, highlighting the efforts to evaluate these models through benchmarks and public leaderboards. We also discuss the challenges and opportunities that ALLMs present for the Arab world.

Biomedical engineers grow whole-brain organoid
Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent every weekday. Biomedical engineers have achieved a major breakthrough in organoid research, pushing us closer to a new era of neurophysiological analysis and treatments. A team at Johns Hopkins University has created some of the first whole-brain organoids that include interconnected, functional tissues from each region of the human brain. According to their paper published in the journal Advanced Science, these neuronal cell masses display activity similar to what's seen in a 40-day-old human fetus, and may soon allow for better, more effective drug treatments for diseases like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. Brain organoid development is one of the most promising, complex, and often surreal biomedical frontiers.

A New Era for WIRED--That Starts With You
At WIRED, we're obsessed with how the world is transforming--and lately, there's been a lot to obsess over. From the breakneck pace of AI research to the tectonic transformation playing out across the US federal government, WIRED's journalists, producers, and editors are committed to reporting from the front lines of these changes and bringing all of you along for the ride. Our goal is to wake up every day and unearth what we describe as "Story Zero": the story before anybody even knows there's a story to tell. We endeavor to do that work in a way that's conversational and accessible, fearless and definitive, and ultimately helps you understand what's changing, why, and how it'll affect your present and your future. I'm incredibly proud that our work this year has often achieved the lofty goals we set for ourselves: WIRED journalists have produced groundbreaking reporting on DOGE's disruption of federal agencies, unearthed ambiguities in the Jeffery Epstein video, delivered a constant drumbeat of clear-eyed coverage on AI's real-world impact (and the AI industry's outrageous talent wars), and found the time to execute on narrative stories that run the gamut, from an AI-inflected murder cult to the quantum apocalypse right around the corner.
For Trump, It's a New Era of Deal-Making With Tech's Most-Coveted Commodity
As President Trump tours the Middle East this week, governments that are flush with oil wealth will be focused on a different treasure, found in America's Silicon Valley. Artificial intelligence chips, which are made by U.S. companies like Nvidia and AMD, are highly coveted by governments across the Middle East. Leaders of Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates want to pour billions of dollars into the construction of data centers to put their countries at the forefront of a new technology heralded for its power to disrupt businesses and create trillions of dollars in economic value. The Gulf States have plenty of energy and cash to build data centers, which house the supercomputers that run A.I. systems. But they need U.S. government approval to buy the American-designed chips to power them.

How iconic NUC mini-PCs are being reimagined for a new era
More than a year has passed since Asus' acquisition of the NUC brand from Intel, which marked the first major change the brand had seen since Intel launched it back in 2013. After more than a decade of continuity -- including last year's transition year where Intel still had a say on design -- this will be the real first year in which Asus has done most of the groundwork, fronting up with its own designs and innovations. So how is the NUC different now in this new era? I spoke to Kuo Wei Chao, general manager of Asus IoT business unit, to find out. The Asus NUC lineup announced at CES 2025 in Las Vegas included the NUC 14 AI and the more premium NUC 14 Pro AI with 48 TOPS NPU AI power and a dedicated Copilot button for quick access to the AI assistant. They were on display alongside two new powerful mini-PCs for everyday use featuring the latest Intel Core Ultra (Series 2) chips: the NUC 15 and NUC 15 Pro .
CEATEC begins near Tokyo as humanity enters 'a new era' with AI
The Combined Exhibition of Advanced Technologies (CEATEC) kicked off in Chiba on Tuesday for a four-day run. The trade fair showcases products and services that employ artificial intelligence and other advanced technologies to try making lives more convenient and work more efficient. The event at the Makuhari Messe convention center brings together 808 companies and organizations from Japan and abroad, including startups and universities. "We have entered a new era that requires us to consider how we face AI to address challenges," Kazuhiro Tsuga, chair of the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association, or JEITA, which organizes the event, said in a speech at the opening ceremony. JEITA expects the exhibition to draw over 100,000 visitors.
A New Era of Special Education Begins with Inclusive AI
As summer winds down and the familiar hum of school buses returns to our neighborhoods, millions of American students are gearing up for another year of learning. But as we stand on the cusp of an artificial intelligence (AI) revolution, this annual ritual is about to face a seismic shift--especially for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). The decisions that school leaders make in the next academic year are likely to determine whether this technological wave creates more inclusive learning environments, or exacerbates existing disparities. A recent study from the Special Olympics Global Center for Inclusion in Education reveals a complex landscape of attitudes towards AI in education and a fear of leaving students with IDD behind. The study found the majority of educators (64%) and parents (77%) of students with IDD view AI as a potentially powerful mechanism to promote more inclusive learning.
